Obituary

Edith L. Eldridge

Edith Louise Eldridge passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, April 2, 2020. She was born on June 6, 1931, in Woodhull, NY, the daughter of Evangeline M. Vine and Rowley M. Hadley. In addition, Gerald L. Card was an influential and dedicated step-father.

In life after death she joins her husband of 64 years, Kenneth Ward Eldridge; her parents, and her brothers Herbert H. Hadley and S. Eugene Card.

After graduating from Woodhull High School, Edith worked at Corning Glass Works, where she would later retire as an executive secretary after 30 years. Edith was an avid quilter, master cook, and lover of animals. She was the bedrock figure for her immediate family.

She is survived by her children Bruce (Alice), James (Lydia), Anne (Rich), T. Andrew (Kathryn), and Paul (Lisa), as well as twelve grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. In addition, she is survived by her brothers, Richard Card (Diane) and Wilbur Card (Martha); and sisters, Marie Monroe, Vivian Wilson (Marvin), and Lydia Card.

A celebration of Edith’s life will be held at a later date due to the CDC guidelines.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in memory of Edith can be made to the Humane Society of Schuyler County, PO Box 427, Montour Falls, NY 14865 (or online at SchuylerHumane.org)

When entering the West side of Building 52, Fourth floor you would see the smiling face of Edith Eldridge. This was my first job graduating from college in 1963 and beginning to work in Refractory Services for Dutch Schlotzhauer, but Edith was George Lilly's secretary and soon I was working for George--so I saw Edith regularly and she always had a smile and could put any of the men, servicing Corning's 60 large furnaces all over the world, with praise or a put-down, which ever was called for, if needed.
Her husband Ken at PRC was the best noon time ping pong player I had ever met, and I never beat Ken. I remember the first laminated ware that became Corelle. It was seven laminate, today all is three laminate. Ken and I had clear custard cups and threw as high in the air as possible and they just bounced on the concrete floor. Dr. Armistead said we couldn't put this in the public so we went back to the three laminate and over 5 billion have been sold as Corelle, now produced by World Kitchen in the former Pressware Plant. I digress--

Our sincere sympathy to Edith’s family, friends and especially Bill, Richard, Marie, Vivian and Lydia (our generation). For her immediate family, we are cousins, as Edith’s mother was a sister of John’s father. We regret we have not stayed in touch with anyone except Bill, and are grateful to him for sending the obituary to us. We have fond memories of the girls, especially when their mother was living, as we often called on that lovely aunt.
Rest in peace, Edith.
