Obituary

Mary Lou Van Buren

Age 73, of Watkins Glen, passed away on July 28, 2020 after a very brief, but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Mary Lou was laid to rest in a private family ceremony on August 3, 2020.

Mary Lou is survived by her husband Ralph, her daughter Amy & her son-in-law James, her son Adam, and her favorite “canine person” Orlando.

Mary Lou leaves behind a legacy of kindness and friendship. All those who knew her and loved her will be left with a loss that cannot be filled. Her family is very appreciative of all of those who reached out to them with kind words and caring thoughts.

To best honor Mary Lou, her family suggests that you perform an act of kindness, as Mary Lou so often did. You may donate to your favorite charity, send flowers to someone, write a letter to someone, or do anything that will brighten someone’s day – acts of kindness always mean so much.

Arrangements entrusted to Royce-Chedzoy Funeral Home, Watkins Glen.

Mrs. VanBuren was the unofficial Room Mother for my entire class, from kindergarten to 12th grade. Usually teachers have but one brief year to inspire us. With Mrs. VanBuren, we got 13 years, as she was there as a substitute teacher right from elementary school up through middle and high school, especially with Amy in our class. (Thank you for sharing your Mom with us, Amy and Adam.) We had so many years of stories, lessons, and encouragement. One that sticks with me most is the story she told us of her first day of school, when a bee stung her, but she was afraid her teacher would be angry if she told him, so she said nothing and suffered through class until the end. When the teacher finally asked what had happened and she told him, he asked why she hadn't spoken up immediately. She told the teacher she didn't want to get in trouble, to which he told her there to never hesitate to speak up when you need to. And she always encouraged us to do so as well.

I hadn't seen her in many years, but I always think of her often. Memories of our school years, of her chatting with my grandmother while Adam and Julie had soccer practice together, and all the times we would see her around town growing up (and always the guarantee of a friendly hello and a good conversation.) She was known by so many people and touched the lives of just as many. I still have the books she gave me in high school--the French dictionaries and the German technical encyclopedias. A fitting gift. This week, when I learned of her passing, I read from those books and remembered her.

My deepest condolences to you all.
