Bernard VanSkiver
Age 89, of Horseheads, passed away at Bethany Manor Rehabilitation Center on Monday, June 12, 2017. Bernard “Bernie” worked as a mechanic for many years at Brown & Hauser (Fox Auto Group) in Painted Post. He was born in Sayre, PA, the 7th of 10 children, of Fay and Olive (Ordway) VanSkiver. He grew up in Ridgebury, PA. After school, he enlisted in US Navy and honorably served in the US Pacific in WWII from 1945-1950. He was a member of American Legion Post 154 of Elmira Heights.
He was predeceased by his parents, and 7 siblings, Carlton, James, Don, Merle, Fay, Jerry and Eleanor.
He was also predeceased by his loving wife, Beverly VanSkiver in 2015. He is survived by four children, Cynthia (Fran) Schoffner of Burdett, Sylvia Miller of Lockport, B. Stephen (April) VanSkiver of Chesapeake, VA, Curtis VanSkiver of Monterey; sisters, Eva Orloski, of Wilkes-Barre, PA, and Mary Jane Doolittle, of Florida; six grandchildren, Bridgette Searles, Brennen Riddick, Tamarynde Cacciotti, Lysette Miller, Amber Johnson, and Daniel VanSkiver; and eight great-grandchildren, Brittany Riddick, Brienna Solomon, Adrienna Solomon, Jenna Solomon, Leo Cacciotti, Brandy Carson, Lia Cacciotti, and Harper Gow.
Bernie enjoyed working on family cars and his own, fixing things for others, and enjoyed family gatherings around the pool.
The family will receive friends and relatives at the Royce-Chedzoy Funeral Home, 212 E. 4th St., Watkins Glen, NY on Friday, June 16, from 12pm-2pm; followed by a funeral service at 2pm; burial at Fairview Cemetery in Painted Post, with military honors.
