After attending college in NYC she worked as a medical secretary before starting her family. Joan was a volunteer for Southern Tier Hospice as well as the Watkins Glen Library and Schuyler Hospital. She was a dog lover, a General Hospital fan, and her cookie jar was never empty. She was passionate about politics and even took part in a march for peace in Washington, DC in the '60s. She is survived by her sons Douglass Oaks and his wife Darienne of Shelburne, VT, Mark Oaks and his wife Carolyn of Fabius, NY, Jonathan Oaks and his wife Penny of Marietta, NY, her daughter-in-law Lisa Oaks of Horseheads, NY and her daughter Ellen (Oaks) Peterson and her husband Edward of Horseheads, NY. Grandchildren Linsley Oaks, William Oaks, Sara Oaks, Katherine (Oaks) Shaw and her husband Patrick, Abigail Oaks, Allyson Oaks, Elizabeth Peterson, Perry Peterson and Nathaniel Peterson. Great-grandchildren Harper and Lennon Shaw. She is predeceased by her husband of 64 years William "Bill" Oaks, her son Michael "Tod" Oaks, and her sister Mary Claire (Bagley) Chase. A memorial service and committal at Lakeview Cemetery will be held at the family's convenience. Donations may be made in her name to Care First (formerly Southern Tier Hospice) 11751 East Corning Road, Corning, NY 14830, or to The Watkins Glen Public Library, 610 South Decatur Street, Watkins Glen, NY 14891.
