She graduated from West Haven High School in 1953 and then from Arcadia University (formerly Beaver College) (PA) in 1957, and later earned her Master’s Degree at Elmira College (NY). After, she began her career as a lifelong educator. She retired from teaching in the Watkins Glen High School as a Reading Specialist and then she worked for BOCES in the External Diploma Program. Over the years, Carol had been a 4-H leader, the SADD advisor, organizer and chairperson of Helpline and Drug Free Schools committee, Trustee of the Watkins Glen Public Library and New Motor Racing Research Library, a member of Schuyler County Mental Health Association, a mediator for the Neighborhood Justice Program, a member of Child Abuse Task force, a member of the Mental Health Association. She also served on the Village of Watkins Glen Housing Authority Board, and she volunteered for the Humane Society of Schuyler County and Wags to Riches Boutique.
She is predeceased by her parents; and for two days, her childhood sweetheart and husband of 64 years, David L. Kunzmann who died June 3, 2021; her brother Bradshaw Grandy of FL, brother-in-law Robert and sister-in-law Susan (Kenney) Kunzmann of Ridgefield CT. She is survived by her daughter Wendy and husband Dr. Stephen Solomon of Owego NY, son Steven Kunzmann of Tega Cay, SC; grandchildren Phillip and wife Kristie (Wicklund) McBride of Owego NY, Adam and wife Kerri (Desrochers) McBride of Denver NC; great grandchildren Keili, Adaline, and Aden McBride of Denver NC, Julianna McBride and McKayla Walker of Owego NY; special family friends Donn McBride of Endicott NY and John Tunnicliff and his family of Clifton Springs NY; and a niece and three nephews.
Carol loved her cats, to sail on Seneca Lake, travel to tropical islands, attend shows at the local theatres and take walks with David. She enjoyed her card-making hobby, reading and gardening. Carol loved her family, friends, and students, and opened her arms and her heart to help anyone in need.
We send out a special thank you to The Bethany Manor Nursing Home and staff where Carol was taken in with care and compassion after a severe stroke; and where she joined her husband David. Together, they were able to enjoy their love of people, playfulness and humor while at the home.
There will be a celebration of both of their lives at the Watkins Glen Elks Lodge on August 1 from 11:00am-1:00pm. A private graveside memorial service for Carol and David will be held at Glenwood Cemetery in Watkins Glen.
Those who wish may kindly consider a memorial contribution to The Humane Society of Schuyler County, PO Box 427, Montour Falls, NY 14865, or a charity of your choice.
