Dr. John G. Allen, 91, of Lancaster, PA., formerly of Corning, NY, West Jefferson, NC, and New Port Richey, FL, passed away on Wednesday, June 20, 2012, after a brief illness, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Maxine (Snell) Allen. John was born on March 5, 1921 in Watkins Glen, New York. He was the only child of Dr. Oakley A. Allen and Harriette (Fisher) Allen. He graduated from Watkins Glen High School in 1939. He attended the University of Michigan and graduated from the University at Buffalo School of Medicine in 1946. He served as a medical officer in the United States Army from 1943 to 1952. He practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology in Corning, NY where he set up his practice in 1956. He delivered a countless number of babies until his first retirement in 1985. He didn’t stay retired very long as he was invited to start the first Obstetrics and Gynecology practice in Jefferson, NC. After that was established, his second and final retirement was in 1988. He retired to New Port Richey, FL where he would spend his days playing golf with his best friend, Dr. Jack Love. He enjoyed golf very much and played regularly all his life until the age of 90. He also loved to travel. He and Maxine spent several summers driving across the country in their motor home. John was a member of the Corning Consistory and a 33rd Degree Mason. He was a past president of the Corning Lions Club as well as a Vestryman at Christ Episcopal Church. In addition to his wife Maxine, he is survived by his daughter Libby Rattrie (Neil) of Jacksonville, FL, and his four sons Thomas Allen (Silvia), of Oradell, NJ, Michael Allen (Toni), of Riverside, CT, Scott Allen (Joanne) of Fredericksburg, VA, and Mark Allen (Beatrice) of Doylestown, PA. He will be missed by his ten grandchildren; Paige, James, Bryan, Andrew, Jonathon, Emily, Danielle, Sean, Kimberly, and Hannah and four great-grandchildren. John was predeceased by his first wife Jean (Markley) Allen (1964). Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Royce-Chedzoy Funeral Home, 212 E. 4th St., Watkins Glen, NY. A graveside service will be held at the Hector Union Cemetery, Rte. 79, Burdett, NY on Saturday, June 30, 2012 at 11:00 AM.
