Janet Arlene (Noble) Wood, 99, of Montour Falls passed of natural causes, Oct. 21, 2022 at her home on Foot’s Hill Road.
Janet (known as “Peg”) was born Sept. 19, 1923, the youngest of six children to William and Emma (Restvale) Noble in Seneca Falls. She grew up on a dairy farm on the shores of Cayuga Lake and loved being on the lake. She graduated from Mynderse Academy and enjoyed tumbling and cheerleading.
Peg married Merle Wood in 1945 while he was still in the Marine Corps. After Merle’s discharge they moved from Mississippi and settled in Montour Falls until they bought their forever home on Foot’s Hill Road and raised their 2 sons, Gary and John. Peg enjoyed fast motorcycle rides with Merle’s Harley Indian. They enjoyed their summers in a simple cottage on the lake and in a boat.
Peg was a joyful person who loved people. She was a girl scout leader even though she did not have a girl. She worked in the school cafeteria and at Guild Brothers Clothing Store in Montour Falls for 22 years. On nice days she would run over to her boat and enjoy her lunch in the middle of Seneca lake. Then dash back to finish her work shift.
Peg was an adventurer. Besides boating, she loved roller coaster rides, hang gliding, and zip lines. She even went sky diving at the age of 90! She loved traveling to see Gary and his family in CA and going to Hawaii and Florida with her son, John.
She was a faithful member of the Odessa Methodist church for nearly 75 years. She baked for the “bake sales” and supported the church in all of their events.
She is survived by her sons, John of Alexandria, VA, and Gary (Ethel) of Lake Forest, CA; 3 grandchildren, Kevin (Kellie), Brian (Cristina), and Janet (Travis) and 5 great-grandkids: Joshua, Jacob, Makenna, Kylie and Hunter.
The family would like to give special thanks to those who provided companionship, meals, delivery service and handyman services over the past few years. A memorial service will be held at Odessa Methodist Church at 12 pm, November 19, 2022.
