Lois Lundberg Carter
85, of Burdett, NY, passed away July 21, 2023 after a brief illness.
She is survived by husband James, daughter Jennifer, son Jeffrey, and grandson Sean Simmons and his wife Joy Ng, and many relatives.
Lois was preceded in death by parents, Harold and Mildred Lundberg, and brother Robert.
She was born May 3, 1938, in Summit, New Jersey and graduated as Valedictorian at Summit High. She pursued higher education at Cornell University (BS), and Elmira College (MS).
After college, she and Jim, newly married, lived on a naval base in Spain for 3 years, where their children were born. She was a devoted mother and partner, nurturing her children’s growth and supporting Jim’s career in public education as a teacher and superintendent of schools in Wilmington, Delaware, Waynesboro, Pennsylvania and New York (Cold Spring, Elmira and Utica) and as a professor at Elmira College.
She and Jim traveled across the country and around the world, experiencing long lasting memories that they shared in presentations and memorabilia detailed in scrapbooks and artwork displayed in the home.
She loved nature, whether collecting seashells on Florida beaches, kayaking on Seneca lake, birding at nature centers or tending to her colorful flowerbeds at each place she called home.
Like her mother, Lois had a keen interest in organizations that motivated women to achieve their highest goals. She was a member of the Presbyterian Women Churchwide, where she led and organized their national conference, Philanthropic Educational Organization, Wednesday Morning Club, where members would present their research on local topics, and Wednesday Afternoon Club, where they could share talents and interests.
She was deeply committed to her local church and community, volunteering for the Hector Refugee Project and Hospice, hosting exchange students, leading museum tours, collecting water quality samples and giving treats to kids at the annual “Trunk or Treat”.
For many of her friends, especially those in Briny Breezes, Florida, where she and Jim would spend the winter season, she was known for her talents in craft making, including stained glass, quilts and seashell art. Over the past few years she also knitted and shared hundreds of “Peace Pals”, cute dolls with wild, colorful hair that brought smiles to young and old alike.
She enjoyed researching local and family history, tracing her genealogical roots to find long-lost relatives in the US and Norway.
Quiet, humble, thoughtful and admired for her love and concern for others, especially her family, Lois touched many lives with her compassion and generosity.
