Margaret Knowles

November 7, 1919 — December 5, 2012

Margaret S. Knowles
Age 93, of Valois, NY, died December 5, 2012. Margaret was born in Watkins Glen on November 7, 1919, the daughter of Lloyd Evans and (Helen) Louise Roberts. She was predeceased by her parents, husband of 73 years, Leland H. Knowles, and sisters Gertrude Dye and Norma McCawley. She had been a resident of Hobe Sound, FL and Valois, NY. She moved to Valois in 1983 from Vestal, NY; where she worked in the office of Lee Knowles, Inc. for 52 years with her husband. Prior to moving to Valois; in Endicott, NY she served as a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader, PTA volunteer, and president of the Rebekahs and Rotary. Later in life, she joined the Red Hats of Watkins Glen. Margaret’s love was her family. She was a good neighbor, great friend, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Family, friends and neighbors were always welcomed at her home. She was a very thoughtful, caring person that always remembered your birthday or favorite food when you came to visit. She was also quietly friendly, sweet, sensitive, kind and modest. She never forced her opinions or even her values on onto others. She liked sweets, especially donuts! And, she was always the “behind-the-scenes” person and organizer, but never took credit. She will be missed by all! She is survived by daughters, Fay (Patrick) Donovan of Bluffton, SC, and Dona Monahan of Bristol, CT; three grandchildren, Mark (Muriel) Donavan of Boynton Beach, FL (and great-grandson, Eric (Sherri) Ponsati; and great-great-granddaughter, Madison) of Oahu, Hawaii, Scott (Lisa) Donovan (great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Bleu) of Charlotte, NC; Amy (Patrick) Blankenship (and great-grandson, Donovan) of Hilton Head, SC; brothers, LeRoy (Emma Lou) Evans of Watkins Glen and sister, Ruth (Charles) Hayes of Montour Falls. The family will receive friends and relatives on Saturday, December 8th, from 2pm-4pm at the Royce-Chedzoy Funeral Home, 212 E. 4th St., Watkins Glen. A funeral service will be held Sunday at 1:30 pm at the Hector Presbyterian Church, Hector, NY; followed by burial at Seneca Union Cemetery in Valois. Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the VLH Volunteer Fire Company, PO Box 46, Hector, NY, 14841.
