DONDERO, Norman C.
ITHACA: Norman C. Dondero, 95, died on July 10, 2013 at Kendal at Ithaca. A scientist, artist and naturalist, he was born and grew up in Massachusetts. He was a graduate of the University of Massachusetts (B.S., 1941), The University of Connecticut (M.S., 1943), and Cornell University (Ph.D. 1952). From 1943 to 1946 he served in the Army of the United States. In 1952 he married Wilma Mehlenbacher Hyde. From 1954 to 1966, at Rutgers University, he taught and pursued research in the field of microbiology of water, water pollution, and biological waste treatment. In 1966 he returned to Cornell to work in the same fields until retirement in 1984. He was a life-long learner and teacher. He is survived by his son, Stephen W. Hyde (Judy) of Homewood, California and four adoring nieces and their families: Kathleen (David) LaMoreaux, Cynthia (John) Terry, Patricia Kehe, and Barbara (Christopher) Deane. At his request there will be no calling hours and a private family graveside service is planned.
