Richard Andrews

June 23, 1917 — May 28, 2007

Richard H. Andrews, of Watkins Glen, NY, died on May 28, 2007, at age 89.

Mr. Andrews received his bachelor’s degree from Harvard College in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II in North Africa, in France, which awarded him the Medaille de Reconnaissance, and in Norway, where he was the senior American in the Allied forces negotiating the liberation of that country.

After the war he worked as an assistant dean of admissions at Harvard College, and then as executive secretary at the American Scandinavian Foundation. In 1953 he became executive director of the then newly formed Corning Glass Works Foundation in Corning, NY, a position he held for 20 years.

He was an active member, serving also as chairman, of the Contributions Council of the Conference Board in New York City until he retired in 1973.

In 1957 he had the idea of starting a college in the hills above Corning. His dedicated leadership of this project resulted in the creation of the Corning Community College.

Mr. Andrews was active in civic affairs in Watkins Glen after his retirement. He had the inspired idea of engaging the noted American architect, Charles Moore, to design the now-famous pavilion near the end of the Seneca Lake pier on the Watkins Glen waterfront – a structure that won numerous national architectural awards. He was equally proud of his leadership in the design and financing of a distinguished new public library for Watkins Glen in 1987, which replaced cramped old facilities up steep steps above the village police station.

Mr. Andrews is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen, by four children, R. Hale Andrews of Sherborn, MA, D. Gage Andrews of Tucson, AZ, Philadelphia M. Broughton of Apex, NC and Amy Zebrowski of Flanders, NJ, and by eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
