SCHMANKE, Sandra
Age 67, of Burdett, died on February 8, 2007 at home surrounded by her family and friends after a long illness. Sandy was born on August 19, 1939 in Rochester, the daughter of the late J. Ottman and Bina (Decker) Schmanke. Sandy and her friend and business partner, Joan Martin, moved to Hector in 1981 and established The Red House Country Inn which they successfully ran for 22 years. After entertaining thousands of guests over the years with memorable stories, delicious culinary delights, and warm country hospitality, Sandy and Joan retired in 2004. Sandy and Joan were instrumental in the creation of The Finger Lakes National Forest in 1982 and the conversion of the Logan Methodist Church into the Logan Community Center. Sandy is survived by her dear friend of 40 years, Joan Martin; her sister, Barbara (David) Saifman; her nieces, Kristen (Mark) Phillips and Jennifer (Cory) Gabriel; her grandnieces, Hannah, Lilly, and Ava; her aunt, Marian Decker of Fairport; and her cousins, Carol (Ted) Nichols, Tom (Barbara) Decker, Bill (Elizabeth) Decker, Sheryl Livingston, and Steven (Marsha) Decker; and Joan's supportive family, John (Sandy) White, Nancy (Rick) McGahey, and Tom (Terri) White and their families and many loving friends. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2007, at 4 p.m. at Royce-Chedzoy Funeral Home, Inc., 212 East Fourth Street, Watkins Glen, NY 14891. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.
